Welcome to Females in Anime!

As the titles says, welcome to Females in Anime! This is a blog that will take a look at the treatment of females ranging from young girls to women in many different animes. I am going to take a look at different character roles and stereotypes that females commonly take in animes though a series of different blog posts for the next couple of weeks.

The purpose of this blog is to raise awareness to other fans about the treatment of females in different animes ranging from shojo to shonen and the possible effects it may have on a person. I have been watching anime for a few years now and have notice that there's a clear difference in male and female characters. It is always the guy that is doing the heavy fighting while the girl is just there on the side being the cheerleader or is in danger. Then recently I have notice the rise of 'moe' and how girls are acting in animes that have those types of characters. It is kind of sickening to see this really.

Anime is a very popular media in Japan and among the fans here in the United States. Millions of people watch it on a daily basis. Still like any media, the images that we see can affect how we perceive things. I am wondering, how is anime influencing people's thoughts just like commercials and TV series do here in the States and elsewhere.

Boy are we going to be touching this subject

I plan to look at a few different stereotypes and/or character types that are very common in anime and bring up a few characters that seem to fit these stereotypes. This may range from the 'Action Girl' to the 'Moe'.  I'll go over the character types and discuss if these type of characters provide positive or negative images of females in general. I am going to try my best not to condemn that a character is bad to watch but try to think about it. Do you really want your girlfriend or future daughter to be just like a certain anime character? I am sure we  can name a few and claim that we don't want them to say that they want to be just like *Insert anime character name here*. Now that would be horrible wouldn't it?

In the end, I want to have a good round table discussion with a few other well knowledgeable people and see if they think that there is a connection between the treatment of women in Japan and in anime. That is if time permits. Still, I am going to have the opinions of other well know anime bloggers and see what they think of this topic and thoughts. So it should be fun.

So this should be a fun little project to do. I am looking forward to this and hoping that all will go well. Got some cool people line up to see what they think about this and I have a good few thoughts myself. I am hoping that it won't blow up in my face but we will see. If anything, I want to hear what you guys have to say about this. Let me hear out your thoughts on how females are in anime. Suggest a few character types/stereotype that you have notice or just a few characters. Discussion will only make this an even more interesting experience (and looks good when I do my paper for this project) so go ahead and abuse the comment box or my email (onepieceatatimeblog (at) gmail.com).

So just wait a few days and see what we have to talk about!

  2. "Do you really want your girlfriend or future daughter to be just like a certain anime character?"
That could be nice depending on who this certain anime character is :)

Anyways, this sounds like an interesting topic. I've never really thought about the treatment of females in anime, but I can see how it can upset or influence someone.
